I was proud to serve with Colonel Schaake for three years on active duty when we were stationed at the 97th U.S. Army Reserve Command in Fort Meade, Maryland. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and assigned to the 97th in 1987. He was an invaluable asset to the command, providing expert advice and oversight of multi-million dollar annual operating budgets. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery is a fitting tribute to Joe’s distinguished service as a soldier and professional commissioned officer in the United States Army. Joe’s passing was a great loss for me and my family.

Words can't express the loss I feel about my fathers passing. I am so sorry I wasn't there or able to talk to you before you passed ..... All I can say is that I love you dad and miss you greatly every day. He was a proud man and sometimes a hard man to get along with but know you are missed and loved.I wish I had more time just to be able to say good bye.I love you dad
Eric

You didn't hesitate to answer your country's call to serve when it needed you.
You were willing to sacrifice all the comforts that we enjoy to defend these freedoms and lives of your countrymen.
Your military face always masked your compassion until your final days.
You were seriously ill and many men would have given up with your health problems but you never complained and battled to stay alive.
I know you wished to reach out to your loved ones but there was no time left.
You were at peace and happy that your sister and best friend, Jerry, were at your side
You faced your death with courage, dignity, humility and humor.
You fought the good fight, Joe Schaake, in the toughest battle of your life and we were happy that we were there for you at the end.
I'm proud to call you our brother.

May you rest in peace,
Love,
Linda and Patrick
