JET WINTTER SEGHERS

Jet Wintter Seghers, born February 10, 1906, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at the age of 98. Jet was born in Donaldsonville, Louisiana to Christian Gottlieb Emmanuel Wintter and Adele Rodeillat Wintter. She moved to New Orleans after the death of her father and attended Soul Business College. In New Orleans she met and married Francis (Frank) B. Seghers (Sr.), to whom she was married for 64 years before his passing. She was also predeceased by her daughter Jet Wintter Prendeville, and her siblings, Lillian Roeder, Marie Wintter, and Christian Wintter. She is survived by her son, the Reverend Dr. Frank B. Seghers, Jr. and her faithful daughter in law Barbara; her five grandchildren: Mark Prendeville (Susan), Jet Prendeville, Christi Malone (J.D.), Patricia Lyles (Timothy), and Jeremy Seghers; four great grandchildren: Susan Semadeni (Peter), Jean Malone, Michelle Lyles, and Rachel Lyles, and several nieces and nephews, and her husband's sister, Helen Bouanchaud.

Jet was a member of the Hendricks Memorial Methodist Church, later to become Faith United Methodist Church and actively participated in United Methodist Women. Even when movement became painful, she insisted on going in her wheelchair to church where she would sit in front of the first pew so that she could hear the sermon and the music. Jet was known for her generosity and charitable acts, which included assistance in building a seminary dormitory for African pastors in Zambia and a church building in Guatemala. She traveled to the Holy Land when she was in her late 70's, including stops in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, where she was baptized in the Jordan River. She loved to travel, and many joked that her middle name must be “ Go.”

Special thanks to her faithful daughter in law, Barbara, who stood by her for many years and to her committed caregivers and friends: Jean Isaac (coordinator), Betty Matson, Jacqueline Barbato, Clarice Mick, Rosa Aline Johnson, Mildred Daniel, Kathy Royce, Sherri Isaac, and Michelle Jeffares - without whom the task of caring for Mrs. Seghers in her own home could never have happened. Thanks also go to her many friends who came by to visit or telephoned to lift her spirits. Words of thanks are also expressed to the physicians and a dentist who made uncommon house calls, when Mrs. Seghers was unable to travel to their offices. Community Hospice of Northeast Florida personnel gave special care to Jet in her home during her final months.

Services were held at Jet's home church, Faith United Methodist Church, 4000 Spring Park Road, Jacksonville, on Monday, August 2, 2004, the Reverend Dr. Frank B. Seghers, Jr., presiding. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery on North Main Street.
