Miss Margaret Piper was a civic worker, world traveler and art and music figure. Margaret had been a resident of the Orlando and Winter Park area since 1941. Born in Montclair, N.J., she was educated in Australia. She divided her time among Florida, New York and New England states, with travels in England and France until 1941. She served on the boards of Sorosis, the Orange County Chapter of American Red Cross, Young Women's Community Club, Community Chest and the Central Florida Branch of the English-Speaking Union. She was past president of Winter Park-Orlando League of Women Voters and also state president of the league. She served on the executive committee of the Citizens' Constitutional Committee which worked on the revision of the Florida constitution, board of governors of Orange Memorial Hospital and boards of Florida Symphony Society, Orlando Humane Society and Orlando Art Association. She also was a member of Friends of the Library of both Winter Park and Orlando, Country Club of Orlando, and in England, Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Royal Horticultural Society, Friends of Tewksbury Abbey and National Trust.

Margaret Piper was also a member of the Third Friday Book Club - the longest running book club in Central Florida history. Her name and address are first mentioned in the club minutes following the October 21, 1955 meeting. She is last mentioned in a note in 1970: "The Book Club decided to contribute individually to a memorial at the Winter Park public Library in memory of Miss Margaret Piper who died October 12."
