Thomas J. Whisner - Melbourne - Thomas J. Whisner "Tommy", age 63, of Melbourne, FL, died at 6 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at Kindred Acute Care Center, Melbourne, FL, with his brother and sister at his side. Tom fought a courageous battle for three years with a lung disorder associated with the construction industry. Tom was born in Warren, PA on December 21, 1946. His family moved to West Palm Beach in 1951 and relocated to Indian Harbour Beach in 1964. Tom graduated from Satellite Beach High, where he excelled in football and "good-looking" girlfriends. Tom is survived by his brother, Tim Whisner of Palm Beach Gardens; his sister, Christine Druhan (David), and nephews, Airman Ryan U.S.AF, and Donovan, all of Orlando. Tom attended Brevard Community College and worked on the Apollo and Saturn Programs for the Boeing Company. Tom and his brother had many astronaut friends and they were an integral part of Cocoa Beach Society. He was the former President and "Man of the Year" multiple times for the Melbourne Kiawanis, President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Brevard County-YMCA Board of Directors, Facilities Chairman of Melbourne Octoberfest, Board of Director, Junior Achievement, hands-on helped build the Brevard Zoo, The Progressive Playground Melbourne Beach, member of Save the St. Johns River Foundation, was active at the "Daily Bread" (soup kitchen) and St. Joseph Church, Palm Bay. Tom served honorably in the U.S. Army and the Florida National Guard. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic (old church), Miller St., Palm Bay, Friday, January 22nd at 10 a.m.
